Bilingual Teaching

Our Primary School follows the Bavarian curriculum. In addition, elements of the Cambridge International Primary Programme are incorporated, in particular within the English language programme.

At Phorms Munich Bilingual Primary School, approximately 60% of lessons are taught in English and 40% in German. Students are provided with a coordinated approach to both languages. In Years 1 and 2, students are taught by an English-speaking class teacher. The main subjects, Maths and HSU (Human, Social, and Natural Studies), are primarily taught in English. Only certain themes (e.g., teaching the time) and mathematical terms (e.g., geometric shapes) are also taught in German. Writing in German is introduced according to the Bavarian curriculum at the beginning of Year 1. English is initially introduced orally, with reading and writing in English being introduced at a later stage in the school year. In Year 3 and 4, a German-speaking class teacher prepares students for secondary school. Here, HSU is taught in German, as the content increasingly focuses on German culture and geography. Teachers ensure that the language used is the one most suitable for the subject being taught or the language that best supports the students.
